When I was getting started on eBay, I didn't know what I wanted to sell either. How did I choose? Let me give you some background information. I'm a bit of a gadget geek. I usually know what electronics are going to come out before they actually do. I watch the gadget blogs and news services. For example, I keep tabs on when Apple is going to update their iPhones. I like to do this, and it works for me.
It's an easy step to go from my gadget hobby to finding gadgets to sell on eBay. In fact, some of the first items I sold on eBay were electronics related. I sold a Playstation 2, an old Gameboy, and some computer games. After running out of gadgets to sell, I found an electronics wholesaler and started selling webcams and other computer accessories. Today, we still sell the same types of items.
What are you interested in? What are your hobbies? Think about how you you can use your hobby to your advantage on eBay. Selling what you like will make your research and product buying a whole lot easier. Why? You'll spend a lot of time researching and talking to suppliers, but it won't seem like "work" to you. (And, as an added bonus, if you sell what you like, you'll always have the latest and greatest item you can use for yourself too.)
Now, if you're just getting started on eBay, you need to realize that nothing is fixed in stone. If you have no idea what you like or what you could sell on eBay, the main thing to do is get started. Choose a category that you think you can develop. You can always change later if you don't know for sure. The main goal is to get moving forward.
Think about an airplane. Often planes take off from runways in the opposite direction of where they want to go. Once the plane is up in the air, then the pilot can make adjustments. The same thing applies for you when starting an online business. Getting your little plane off the ground by selling whatever you can is the first step. Next, once you've mastered the take off and basic skills of flying, you can choose which direction you want to go.
The most important thing you can do as a beginner is to just get going. If you choose to travel in too many directions at once, you'll never get anywhere. Sell stuff around your house.
